A galaxy of home-tape "stars" turns out for this sprawling, 28-song, double CDR collaboration with cassette-culture godfather Don Campau. Jim Shelley, MJB, Ken Clinger, Ray Carmen, Dino DiMuro, CR Goff III, Russ Stedman, J. Mundok, Amy Denio, Kevyn Dymond, Al Perry, Heather Perkins, Robin O'Brien and R. Stevie Moore lend their talents to this opus, which, quaintly, was produced by Campau via US Postal Service correspondence with his collaborators. Yes, Virginia, there still is such a thing as snail mail! Don's old-school ways are echoed in the music of Pen Pals 3 and its nominal theme of "sense of place." Many of these (sm)art-pop tunes here have a nostalgic, if not elegaic feel; it's as if the Campau gang, sensing the passing of their day, has gathered for a final blow-out. Of course, Don, who's been self-releasing music since 1981, has no intention of fading away. At this wrting, Pen Pals 3 had been followed by Pen Pals 4 and 8 other recordings — and we can all be grateful for that!
